On the last day of campaigning, Jean Charest’s Liberal party as filed a police complaint alleging that misleading robocalls have been circulating the Quebec City region.
“All of these calls are fake and obviously come from an organization or individuals wishing to harm the Liberal campaign,” the party said in a statement.
The alleged robocall tactic is similar to the one that was used across Canada in the last federal election.
Liberal staff claim that two types of robocalls were used.
The first gives voters a phone number and urges them to call the Liberal Party. The phone call led to an automated message asking them to leave their details including their name and phone number.
The second type of robocall featured harassing phone calls in Laval by people who posed as Liberal volunteers.
Liberal party spokesman Michel Rochette said his party got the word of these phone calls this morning and the party is now trying to determine how geographically widespread they may be.
Rochette said that the robocalls are most concentrated in a close riding in Quebec City called Tashereau.
“We hope the police will act as quickly as possible,” he said.
Both the PQ and CAQ have denied knowledge of these robocalls and Quebec’s Directeur-général des élections du Québec confirmed that it got an official complaint from the Liberals.
Spokeswoman Corinne Brunelle for the legal affairs department of the Directeur-général des élections du Québec said it is too early to say if a full investigation will be launched.
Meanwhile, recent polls show poor fortunes for the Liberal Party of Quebec. In the Quebec City region, the CAQ is expected to make a sweep of the region. In the rest of the province, especially among francophones, the PQ has built enough momentum to possibly form a majority government.
However, in many ridings, the race is close and every vote will count and any outcome can be expected come tomorrow night.
